Transforming individuals, households and businesses for greater economic impact

    Welcome to GreaterWork!

GreaterWork is a platform designed to unlock the full economic potential of Ugandans by equiping individuals, households and businesses with knowledge that enhances their capacity to earn more, compete effectively, and contribute meaningfully to economic growth.

    Why GreaterWork Exists

Since 1986, the Government of Uganda has implemented a number of poverty alleviation and wealth-creation programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting inclusive economic growth. These include the Poverty Eradication Action Plan (PEAP), Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture (PMA), Entandikwa, Prosperity for All (Bonna Bagagawale), Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), Emyooga, and the Parish Development Model (PDM), among others.

Collectively, these initiatives have sought to reduce poverty, transform the structure of the economy, increase household incomes, promote shared prosperity, and support Uganda's transition to middle-income status. They have also encouraged greater participation of households and small enterprises in productive economic activities, thereby deepening their integration into the formal economy.

From a financial sector perspective, these programmes have contributed to financial inclusion by expanding the reach of financial services to previously underserved populations. They have facilitated access to finance, strengthened financial literacy, and increased the uptake of formal financial products and services, thereby supporting enterprise development and enhancing the ability of households and businesses to invest, save, and grow.

The Challenge GreaterWork aims to Address

The benefits notwithstanding, businesses especially the micro and small, which form the foundation of Uganda’s private sector, continue to struggle with limited access to finance, low productivity, limited access to markets, low technology adoption, weak managerial and business skills. The result of all this is a cycle of low output, reduced profitability, minimal reinvestment, and in some cases, eventual business closure. This also limits tax contributions, job creation, and broader poverty alleviation efforts.

With regard to agriculture, some individuals or households own land but lack the capacity, resources, or skills to utilize it productively, resulting in underutilisation or subsistence farming. Others sell seasonal produce without preservation, processing, or value addition, while some produce at scale but prioritize quantity over quality, thereby recieving lower returns for their output. These challenges constrain household and enterprise productivity, limit income growth, and hinder participation in higher-value and more profitable markets.

    What needs to change?

In light of the challenges at hand, there is a critical need to transform Ugandan businesses to achieve greater economic impact. This transformation requires advocating for productivity, value addition, market orientation, and financial discipline for sustained income growth and competitiveness. An equally important needed change is a mindset shift towards agriculture. Agriculture must be approached with a commercial mindset rather than a survival mechanism.

How GreaterWork will cause the change

GreaterWork provides simplified and practical information that empowers businesses and households to address key challenges and unlock their full economic potential.
